Civic Award for Bakewell Flats

06/12/2006

Opening at Bakewell

The six flats were built for local  registered social landlord, Peak District Rural Housing Association.  They are for older people with a close connection to the town  or surrounding area.  The development was completed at the end of last year and the tenants have now all settled in well.   Being in the centre of Bakewell is ideal as there is easy access to the shops and services.

The flats were part of the development of the site betweenNew Street and Castle Street which previously housed the Army Cadet Hall.  When a new hall was planned the Army Cadet Force offered part of the site for the flats.  Derbyshire Dales District Council supported the scheme by making a small area of land available and with the Housing Corporation provided grant money to help with the cost of  building.  Architects  for the scheme were Allan Joyce Associates of Nottingham and the contractors were local firm Wildgoose Construction of Ashover.

The design of the scheme has already received the prestigious accolade of being included in the Prince of Wales’s Affordable Rural Housing Initiatives Design Guide.

Pat Lunn, chairman of the Bakewell and District Civic Society said “We are pleased to make this award.  Miracle Court has completed the improvements to New Street that started when the library was moved.  The flats also provide much needed affordable housing for the town.”
