New Houses at Hope
26/03/2009
The village of Hope is set in the northern Derbyshire and Peak District valley and was mentioned in the Doomesday book as having both a priest and a church. The present church dates back to the 13th Century and the railway, which arrived in Hope in 1892, opened up employment prospects for local people.
Above the village lies two hills, Winhill and Losehill, which got their names after two armies assembled there and fought a battle in 626AD. The armies were assembled by the Kings of Wessex and Northumbria and since the King of Northumbria was camped on the highest hill, protected by a stone wall, his enemies were forced back and he won.
PDRHA recently completed four two bedroom houses located on the main road running through the village. The development was funded by a grant from both the newly formed Homes and Communities Agency and from High Peak Borough Council. All four of the homes are for rent and families have recently moved into them.
One of the new residents who attended the event was Debbie Marshall, who is pictured along with her daughter and Councillor Bingham. Debbie has lived in the village for 29 years and says that most of her family still live in the village – in fact her cousin lives right next door to her at the same scheme. Debbie’s daughter currently attends the local pre school and will then attend Hope Primary School.
